Department Of Philosophy
Welcome to the Department of Philosophy, Rishi Bankim Chandra College for Women, an esteemed Institution dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and the exploration of fundamental questions about existence, ethics, and the nature of reality. The department was initiated in 13th July, 1984, after the trifurcation of the mother institute and the Philosophy Honours course was introduced in 2001 under the University of Calcutta. Till date, the General as well as Honours courses are continuing under the West Bengal State University (WBSU). Since its establishment on July 13, 1984, Rishi Bankim Chandra College for Women has been a leading institution in fostering intellectual curiosity and critical thinking among its students. Since its onset, the college underwent significant development, expanding its scope and enriching its academic offerings.
At Rishi Bankim Chandra College for Women’s Philosophy Department, we believe that Philosophy is not merely a subject but a way of life, enabling individuals to engage with the world in a reflective and thoughtful manner. Our dedicated faculty members are passionate about teaching and guiding students through the fascinating realms of Metaphysics, Ethics, Epistemology, Logic, and more. Through our rigorous curriculum and engaging learning experiences, we strive to cultivate a deep understanding of philosophical traditions and encourage students to develop their own unique perspectives.
The Philosophy Department also promotes interdisciplinary studies, encouraging students to explore connections between Philosophy and other fields of inquiry such as Literature, Psychology, Science, and Social Sciences. We provide a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment where students can engage in lively debates, analyze complex arguments, and develop their critical and analytical skills. Most of the students have achieved their desired outcomes and students in the 3 year Honours (1+1+1) system have shown their capabilities to the extreme in the university examination and the most extraordinary ones have even achieved a prestigious First Class marks. Students are equally doing their best in the CBCS system. Consistent, hardworking and meritorious students have been accepted into postgraduate programmes at several renowned universities and colleges.
As you navigate through our website, you will find information about our faculty members, course offerings and events organized by the department. We invite you to join our vibrant academic community, where you can embark on an intellectual journey that will not only shape your academic endeavours but also broaden your understanding of the world and your place in it.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Department of Philosophy at Rishi Bankim Chandra College for Women, where the pursuit of wisdom and the exploration of life's profound questions are at the heart of our educational mission.
